At my workplace, I have been working for about 4 months with a female coworker

We work at a local hole-in-the-wall well franchised restaurant and after serving people per a normal work day, an older couple walks up. They order everything normally and when it comes to ring them up, they use a “Get two footlongs for $11.99” coupon and they inquire about the price because after tax, it was roughly $13. My coworker explains that the tax was about a dollar and they nod, pay with a $20 bill and leave. About 10 minutes later, the couple walks in, cuts the line of customers and demands that they get $19 back. We are very confused about what they mean and they start to scream and demand that we give them their money back because we cheated them.
The wife screams: “It says $11.99!” we paid $13! We should have only paid the one dollar tax!!!”
Coworker: “No ma’am, it took about $6 off your original price, making it $11.99 and then added tax, you paid the correct amount and received the correct change.”
Husband: “No, the price was $18!!! The we used the coupon! We should’ve only paid $6!!!”
At this point, my coworker and I are confused because both the husband and wife are demanding for different amounts returned. My coworker goes silent, staring at the coupon and then says “Oh, I get it now!”
Husband: “Yeah, I bet you do, dumb b****.” and starts to look all smug.
Coworker: This coupon makes the price $11.99, it doesn’t take $11.99 off the original price. It says it here.” and points to the terms of the coupon at the bottom.
The husband snatches the coupon and both my coworker watch as his and his wife’s faces pale and their bodies visually deflate from embarrassment.
Husband: My mistake…
They grabbed their sandwiches and booked it out of there. Sadly, that was the last day that my coworker worked, she quit after her shift.
