I teach swimming lessons, but we also offer a service where we will play with a kid in the pool before or after their lesson to give the parents some extra time. I have one such session with a four year old boy. These are some highlights from our adventures.

Kid: [discussing the toy boat he’s currently holding above the water] He’s flying now because he can transform like Transformers.
Me: You know about Transformers? I played with them when I was little. Who’s your favorite?
Kid: I don’t remember his name. He turns into a submarine!
Me: [racking my brain] I can’t think of that one either.
Kid: Let’s call him Blue.
Me: Blue it is.

Kid: [as we’re playing pretend with some pool toys] Now over here! *runs to the edge and places his toy shark on the side of the pool*
Me: Got it! *runs with him and waits to see what he does”
Kid: [looks at me expectantly]
Me: …
Kid: Ask me why he’s on the ground.
Me: Oh! Why is he on the ground?
Kid: Well it’s because he….
