Unfiltered Story #361381
I currently work as an administrative assistant for a mental health clinic. The mental health workers I work with are often very stressed out. They’re underpaid, under appreciated and overworked, always being asked to do more, more, more… Most of the time they run by my desk they looked so frazzled that they look like they’re about to cry at any second. To offer just a little bit a peace for them I keep a candy bowl in my office. Sometimes a small piece of chocolate and a moment for them to vent their frustrations helps a lot but during the holidays something very curious happens. I usually buy candy for them once a week but around Christmas time, we get quite a bit of boxed chocolate from different doctor offices and other companies we work with. Since I’m not a big chocolate eater myself I don’t open the plastic on the chocolate boxes but put them with the chocolate that normally have for people. The boxes say something like Fancy Chocolates right on the front of the box.
Coworker one: *Looks in candy bowl and scrounges around for the last few pieces of chocolate.* “Looks like you’re running out of candy. Too bad, I could really use some chocolate! I gotta head out.”
My coworker leaves and puzzled I look over at the mountain of chocolate. Not seeing with the issue is I go back to doing my normal work.
Coworker two: “Nooooo! You don’t have any chocolate! Why don’t you have any chocolate! *Dramatically Sniffles*
Me: “But there is chocolate right there!” I point to the unwrapped boxes.
Coworker two: “No it’s okay, I’ll get some while I’m on the road! See ya!”
After this goes on for a number of days with four different coworkers bemoaning my lack of chocolate I do a little experiment. I open one of the boxes of chocolates and put the cover underneath the box but leave the little wax sheet covering it to protect the chocolates.
Coworker one: “Oh my God! You have chocolate again! Hey (Coworker two) look, there’s chocolate again!
They crowd into my office around the box of chocolate reading the chocolate guide and getting the one they like best. This continues until the chocolate is down to the last sad few and two coworkers even get into a fight because apparently no one likes the coconut one and they battle it out for the last one that isn’t filled with coconut, Several times they replace the cover on the chocolate box but now that it’s opened no one has a problem coming in and helping themselves to the chocolate but when it’s done I throw out the empty box and put the same exact chocolate box out but don’t take off the plastic wrapper thinking that since they’ve already eaten one box they will just help themselves like before.
Through out the day:
Coworker one, two and three each give me variations of: “You don’t have any chocolate today?”
