Unfiltered Story #353542

I have a student who has recently come out as gender fluid. The school and the students support her fully, but the student is still shy and still figuring themselves out. As the year goes on, she begins to become more confident. One day we’re discussing what idioms are in class. Reminder, idioms are expressions that are not meant to be taken literally. For example, ‘that’ll happen when pigs fly’ is an idiom and it’s a way to imply that something won’t happen. At the end of the class, I had the class write down an idiom. They could create their own or change the wording of one of the examples we used. This student hands their idiom to me and it says:

“I like my men like I like my coffee. I’m gay.’

We did have to change it because it’s not an idiom, but the unexpectedness of the comment made me laugh and it was so nice to see said student confident enough to share this.
