(It’s my first day in Plays of Shakespeare, and the professor is going over how people watched Shakespeare plays during his time.)

Professor: It’s not like it was today, where we consider Shakespeare a form of high art and put it on in fancy, expensive theatres. It was considered a more low-brow form of entertainment, and the audience was pretty unforgiving. Today, most audiences are quiet and respectful. Back then, when Hamlet gave his “to be or not to be,” speech, someone in the audience might yell, “Just kill yourself!”
