(My boyfriend, while he loves steak, is very particulate about how it’s cooked, and as such will only order steak in grill restaurants or steak restaurants, where they know how to cook steak to the different rarities. We are in a grill restaurant, and he’s ordered steak, medium rare, and I’ve ordered a burger, with both of us having cocktails. When he cuts into the steak, however, it’s well done, so he calls the waiter over.)

Boyfriend: I’m sorry, I hate to be a pain, but my steak is well done, and I ordered it medium rare. (He shows the waiter that there’s no pink in the steak.)

Waiter: I am so sorry about that, I’ll take this away and get you another straight away.

(He walks off with [Boyfriend]’s dinner, so I share some of my chips with him so that he can at least have something while he waits. The waiter brings another dish over, and this time stays that to make sure that everything is okay. Unfortunately, again, when it’s cut into it’s once again well done.)

Waiter: I am so sorry, sir, I don’t know what’s going on with the chef today.

Boyfriend: That’s alright, it’s not your fault. Can I just get fish and chips instead?

Waiter: No problem, sir, I’ll get that to you right away.

(We wait a little bit longer, I’ve pretty much finished my meal by this point, and the waiter brings over his fish and chips. The batter on the fish is a bit soggy, but at this point he’s so hungry he doesn’t care and eats it. The manager comes over, explaining that the waiter has told him about the issues and is checking in on us. [Boyfriend] tells him what the issues were and thanks him for checking in on us.)

Manager: Well, due to the issues you’ve had, I can’t in good conscience charge you for this, so both of your meals and drinks are on me today.

Boyfriend: Are you sure? My girlfriend’s burger was fine and our drinks were good, and I’ve eaten my fish and chips. We’re more than happy to pay for those.

Manager: I’m sure, I hope you guys enjoy the rest of this evening.

(He leaves and both me and [Boyfriend] are stunned. We finish up and give our waiter a tip, as he was brilliant and we know that the chef messing up wasn’t his fault. Even though we had issues from the meals, it is next to never the server’s fault. Please don’t ever skimp on your server’s tip just because the food wasn’t to your liking.)
