Unfiltered Story #352641
I’m good at math and have a large vocabulary. Around sixth grade, my teachers start assuming that I couldn’t possibly be “that smart” AND bad at subjects other than math or vocabulary, leading to conversations like the following.
Me: *approaching teacher with assignment* “I need help with this.”
Teacher: “No you don’t.”
Me: “But I don’t understand!”
Teacher: “Yes you do. Sit down.”
My grades plummet and eventually I stop asking for help entirely. When I get to high school things only get worse as for some reason we have a six-day rotation despite the five-day school week, and I have exactly one study period the entire rotation.
I move to a new school over vacation in my sophomore year, and am met with regular study periods and teachers who DON’T call students liars when they ask for help. My grades – somehow, mysteriously, for reasons I will surely never know – went through the roof within a matter of weeks.
