This is the story of when I passed my driving license.

In the country town where I lived, there was only two examiner. One was a of not particular distinction. But the other a middle age woman was known as “the hag”.
The rumor was that you will never get your license if you pass it with the hag, there was story of a girl trying for the third time and starting to cry the moment she saw it would be with her.

Now, i’m old enough to realize a lot of it was probably hazing from others, but at the time, it was quite efficient.

Here comes my turn, and of course, I’m with the hag. I do my best to ignore it, and driving my 20 minutes the best I can.
Things seems to go well enough, and I’m asked to do a parallel parking in a place where it is more grass than curb.

I do my parallel parking, the examiner opens her door to check, and said everything looks fine.

To understand what happened in the following seconds, you need a little more information.
In France, driving age is 18, but there is a specific option that allow you to drive as early as 16, before passing your practical license (you still need theoretical and approval for driving school) as long as you do it with a registered adult.
I went through this, which mean that for 18 month, I was my mother’s driver.

Now back to the situation, when the examiner opened the door, I notice a big puddle of water, the kind of there is no way you let your mother get in if you want to eat tonight.
So when the examiner says ‘everything looks fine’ I can’t refrain to answer back : “no it’s not, you can’t get out because of the puddle, I need to move the car a few meters” (there was room for it).
And then the examiner start to laugh and says : “You already want to get rid of me ?”

I got my driving license that day. I don’t know how much that puddle helped me, but a least it opened my eyes to the fact that the “hag” was human after all.
