Unfiltered Story #342750

I stopped at a grocery store after a long day at work (customer service job) to pick up a few things. Once I finally got all my items, I headed to the self-checkouts. Some of them were used and the worker was standing near one of them.

A worker had just moved from one register to another as I got in line. He seemed to be just checking the number of paper bags the register had. It wasn’t long after he got there, that I went up to the register. I assumed he was about to move to the next register momentarily as he wasn’t in the way of the scanner or bagging area. The entire time he was checking the bags and when I came up, he said nothing.

We were not in each other’s way, so I started scanning my things. After I was almost done, he piped up.

Worker: You saw me over working here and could’ve gone to another register. That was rude of you.

I didn’t say anything but finished my order and quickly get out of there, wondering what went wrong. I know I was at a till he was at but from waiting in line, I didn’t think he would be long. He didn’t obstruct the register either. So, I didn’t think I did anything wrong. I left wondering how a worked could call someone who didn’t seem to do anything, nor say anything, rude. Only at the end did he speak to me. I was confused. I would never call a customer rude at my job, even if they truly were being rude. I didn’t know if I should say something to someone but I am too anxious of a person to do that anyway.

I hope to not run into him again. Don’t call customers rude in situations where they have seemingly done nothing wrong or even said a word to you.
