Unfiltered Story #342674

I’m the author of this story: https://notalwaysright.com/bedside-manner-who-part-2/290248/

I recently got a primary physician who cares about me. She is a nurse practitioner and a fantastic advocate. Praise nurse practitioners!

I’m also autistic and have ADHD. It turns out I actually can’t handle change well. And, the stress about change does make me hurt more.

Instead of yelling at me to grow up and learn to handle change (like that doctor did when I was 6… in the 90s), she helped me brainstorm ways to reduce the number of disruptions to my routine, and actually wrote letters demanding accommodations on the basis that I don’t handle change well.

The accommodations were very doable, and wouldn’t put anyone out. They were, however, a little silly and I never would have asked had she not suggested it.

I do think it’s funny that the doctor who screamed at me, accusing me of not coping with change, sort of turned out to be correct… if unhelpful.
