( I am a 15 year old figure skater who teaches younger kids how to skate at the rink. I sometimes teach my own class of beginning skaters. On this particular occasion, myself and a girl who is assisting me are working with three kids who are 6 years old at most, and have never skated before. We usually teach them by drawing pictures on the ice, blowing bubbles, and making them throw stuffed animals across the ice and skate to pick them up. One of the kids keeps crawling across the ice and i have to pixk him up constantly, while also trying to teach my class.Suddenly an older man is waiting by the boards and I have no idea who he is. I see the girl helping me, who is pretty new to the job, talk to him.)
Me:[assistant’s name], who is that?
Assistant: That’s [student’s] father.
(Parents are not allowed to be back there, so I go to ask him to please leave that area.)
Me: Excuse me sir, are you [student’s] father?
Farher: yes. What are you trying to teach these kids?
Me: Excuse me?
Father: What’s your name?
Me: I’m [my name]
Father: I’m going to speak with the person in charge! I don’t see how drawing pictures on the ice helps them skate!
Me: Well, sir, this is how we teach them.
Father: my son can skate better than this! Why isn’t he skating?! I’m going to talk to your boss!
(His son can’t even stand up on his own yet, let alone skate. I go get my boss and explain the problem. She talks to the man and evaluates his son’s abilities early, then puts him in a group of the same level, but with a professional coach. The son can’t
skate at all and has trouble paying attention.)
