(My friend and I are in 5th grade, both boys. We have been walking through the halls of our school waiting for lunch to end. Neither of us has said anything for a few minutes.)

Friend: (suddenly) Do you ever get that feeling that if you’re a girl, you’re another girl’s friend?

Me: Um, no.

Friend: Oh. All right.

(He seemed pretty confused, and said nothing else about it. Several years later, he still doesn’t know what he meant to ask.)
