My high school history teacher, Mr. A. was great. He was the no-nonsense sort, but he had a passion for history and his students. To keep discipline in class, he had a “mark” system. Get 3 marks and you got detention. I got a mark once for stating that Magellen circumcised the world. (He and I both knew I knew the right word, so it was a fair cop.) Though we all knew the rules, one student — I’ll call him Chuck — clearly had not caught on. One day he’s completely turned around and talking loudly to the student behind him.

Mr. A: Chuck, uh, that’s one for you then!

Chuck: [turns around and loudly and cheerfully says] Oh, great! Thanks Mr. A!
