Unfiltered Story #314511
My brother is, by his own description, the biggest nerd I know. (There is no close second.) He spends five hours out of a day, minimum, playing video games – not bloody shooters, but RPGs, platformers, and action/adventure games. He has a bookshelf full of manga and he’s an avid follower of several anime. He’d much rather sit down with a good book than turn on a good movie, and only the most faithful adaptations will receive his praise.
He has recently gotten into a relationship with who SEEMS to be a very nice girl. Me [female] and my girlfriend of two years invite them on a double-date in the interest of getting to know her a little better. We make reservations at a restaurant, and plan to arrive in two vehicles; my brother and his GF in her car, and me and my GF in my car.
They get there first; when we get to the restaurant, we are immediately greeted with the tail end of a s***show. My brother’s GF is sitting at a table with two menus, and he is standing two paces away from the table with the waitress standing uncomfortably nearby.
Brother: No, f*** you. I will not sit here and listen to you insult everything I love. F*** you, f*** your two-faced b****iness, f*** your racism, f*** your homophobia, f*** your pretentious attitude, and pay for your own dinner.
Waitress: Sir, if you’re going to be speaking like that in here, I’m going to have to ask you to leave.
Brother: (pulling out his wallet) With pleasure. (hands the waitress a bill) And consider this a tip for serving me.
Waitress: You… haven’t ordered yet.
Brother: That’s no excuse for mistreating the serving staff.
Me: (as he approaches the entrance) Change the dinner plan?
Brother: Please.
The three of us got drive-thru elsewhere, and my GF managed to convince him to speak up about what had happened. Turns out, my brother’s GF had been passively-aggressively insulting his interests in the entirety of the time they had been together. He gave us a few samples…
Brother: (playing [family-friendly RPG] when she shows up for a date)
His GF: Isn’t that a kids’ game? Why don’t you play something a little more grown-up?
Brother: Because I enjoy it.
Brother: (reading a manga during a given drive or wait)
His GF: Your book’s backwards.
Brother: It’s not backwards, it’s from Japan. They read right-to-left, and the translation kept the orientation.
His GF: Why don’t you read something from North America?
Brother: Because this has a good story.
Brother: (watching anime with Japanese audio and English subtitles when she visits)
His GF: Why are you watching that in some foreign language?
Brother: Because I understand enough Japanese to get more out of the original audio than a dub.
His GF: You could just watch something that was made in English in the first place.
Brother: Maybe, but I like where this is going.
Brother: (reading a book with a known movie adaptation)
His GF: You know there’s a movie, right?
Brother: I know, but the book was the original.
His GF: Yeah, but the movie is a lot more fun to watch.
Brother: Each their own.
When I asked him why he had been putting up with that sort of attitude, my brother admitted that he had just ignored it because she acted nice enough when they were actually doing things together. But when she happened to insult me and my GF while they were waiting for us to show up, his “she’s not that bad” filter broke down, and everything went to s***.
Instead of apologizing or even pretending to apologize, she had doubled down and insulted his interests outright in addition to insulting us, leading to what we walked in on.
The real kicker? My brother had recently gotten a windfall and had been planning to pay for dinner for all of us… and his GF had taken that as an excuse to travel light. She’d come to dinner with nothing but her phone; no cash, no cards, no ID. As far as we’re aware, she had no means to pay for whatever dinner she was planning to have – good thing they hadn’t ordered yet! – and had to either walk home, leaving her car behind, or hope she didn’t run into any cops during the drive without her license.
