A few years ago my wife and I do a tour of New England for the Fall, we’re British but have visited the US many times and know the tipping system well. We visit a chain diner restaurant for breakfast, we’re seated and our order is taken. Half an hour later we’ve received nothing, not even the drinks, we flag down the waitress we ordered from, she tells us ‘it’ll be along soon’. This pattern repeats several times, after around eighty minutes I go to the payment stand to see what’s going on, the manager is there and after a few minutes comes back to tell us that the order cannot be found and never made it to the kitchen. We give her the order again and the food and drink is out to us very quickly indeed.

As we leave and pay I say that I’m not really happy to pay for the tip as we didn’t think the service quality justified it, the manager is fine with this but the original waitress absolutely loses it, following us out to our car shouting at us!
