Unfiltered Story #313261
A few years ago, the economy went down the pan. I and many others, lost our jobs.
Thankfully I was lucky and found a new one pretty quickly.
Although having worked for large multinationals most of my life, working for a family run office was a bit of a change.
People turned up late, snuck off early. Some spent most of their time talking, others didn’t seem to do anything at all.
Everyone was doing the bare minimum to not get fired, and it was driving me crazy.
Weeks went on, the ones turning up late or doing nothing, stayed the same.
The ones actually doing work, talked about leaving and eventually a number did.
I was just trying to keep myself busy, and to myself.
Eventually the owner decided to turn up and called me into his office.
Me: everything OK?
Owner: oh yes, I just wanted a chat. How are you settling in?
Me: ok I guess, the work is simple enough .
Owner: oh good, in fact I wanted to ask for your help. I have some reports to do but don’t have time. Could you take a look?
(Bareing in mind, five people still have their coats on chatting, an hour after they was supposed to start. And I was the only one on time today. I felt pretty annoyed.)
Me: I’m pretty busy at the moment, I would hate for my other work to delay my response on this. Is there noone else that might be better suited?
Owner: everyone is busy right now, but I think your skills would be best suited anyway.
Me: I can take a look, but like I said I’m pretty busy so I don’t think i will have time.
Owner: oh sure, just take a look. Maybe you could stay late?!
(I didn’t respond, I went back to my desk, took a look at my “coworkers” five if whom where still chatting, one had clearly fallen asleep. And I started to look for another job.
One of the better coworkers told me about a company he was applying to, I submitted my CV too.
The owner emailed me the reports, looked like something he should be doing, instead he left early , didn’t even let anyone know.
Only then i realised he was the laziest of them all. I found another job a few months later.
