Unfiltered Story #312697
I heard this story from a relative and thought it too good not to share.
First, a bit of background: Dean had pranked his wife Helen several times over the years. Also, Dean had long made no secret of the fact that he wanted a grandson that could carry his family’s uncommon surname to the next generation. He already had several grandchildren, but all were his daughters’ children. However, Dean and Helen’s son Roy and his wife Sandra were now expecting their first child.
That day, when Dean went home for lunch, Helen rushed to the door with the good news: Roy and Sandra had a son! Dean was elated beyond words, and readily accepted Helen’s explanations for why they hadn’t heard from Roy or Sandra yet that day. Helen didn’t even object when Dean said he was treating everyone at work to coffee that afternoon (and the office’s cafeteria ended up serving quite a bit more coffee than usual that day).
Later that afternoon, Roy arrived at Dean’s office just as Dean’s predecessor had stepped in to congratulate him after seeing the sign in the cafeteria. Roy delivered a rude awakening when he informed the others that they were celebrating a bit early… the baby actually had not arrived yet.
The look on Dean’s face must have been priceless when he said, “WHAT?!”
Roy patiently answered the resulting barrage of questions from his father before Dean finally conceded that Helen had pranked him but good!
That evening, Roy and Sandra’s daughter, Rachel, was born. When Dean saw his newest granddaughter, he admitted he wouldn’t want to change a thing.
Incidentally, this all happened on April Fools’ Day.
At the time, the local newspaper printed accounts of the more spectacular April Fools’ gags they heard about, and this one was declared “THE prank of the year”.
As a footnote, Roy and Sandra had a few more children over the next few years – Susan, Joann, and last but certainly not least, Gary.
