Unfiltered Story #312488
John works for someone in my team, he’s a bit of a slacker, has anger issues and often acts inappropriately around the office.
So when he comes up to me as to why he didn’t get a promotion , I was pretty surprised he thought he would ever have a chance.
Everyone else at that level, is hardworking, professional and highly motivated.
But if he wanted feedback to improve himself , I would be happy to help. I take him to an empty office, I ask someone in the office to bring me the interview notes.
Me: ok so, you want to know why you didn’t get (job)?
John: yeah, that idiot (worker) got it. And he’s only been here a year!
Me: time served isn’t the only reason. Is it ok if I pull up your last evaluation.
John: yeah whatever. I just want to know why that dumb ass got it and I didn’t.
Me: well name calling isn’t helping. And let me see. OK your timekeeping , sickness isn’t either. Have you made an effort to improve them?
John: what has that got to do with anything?
Me: this is all considered, what about the drugs test? Last time you refused to do one? That would be the same if you where to be given this job. Especially with some of the accounts.
John: well thats stupid. No, I shouldn’t have to!
(We are interrupted by a knock on the door. One of the office staff who was getting the interview notes, whispers something to me.)
Me: ok, John. Consider everything we talked about today. But the biggest issue in you progressing , is when you don’t actually apply for the job.
John: what! I’m sure I did.
Me: they checked it twice.
(He mutters something about we should have known he would have been interested and its not his fault.
Job eventually left the company after a major accident he caused but didn’t stick around for the investigation.
He won’t be missed.)
