Unfiltered Story #312427

When I taught evening courses, inevitably there was a one fire-drill per semester. I always had warnings of this in my paperwork. One night, the expected alarm sounded and I herded everyone out of the class and, as usual, I was the last to leave. The 10 minute disruption was generally accepted by everyone graciously and it never occurred to me to wonder what happened if anyone didn’t go along with the drill.

I found out.

Since I went out last, I was the first to return to my classroom only to find it wasn’t empty. There was one lone student seated at his desk. He was surrounded by security, a police officer, someone in administration and a fire marshal. I arrived just in time to hear the marshal ask “did your instructor know you were in the classroom?” The student looked at his feet and mumbled “no.” I got out of that problem easily.

Let’s just say that I warned my future students not to try this.
