In the UK, liquor stores are often described as ‘Off sales” because they are licenced to sell alcohol which then must be opened and consumed off-site.
You can also buy alcohol for yourself from the age of 18 which means that some people who might look quite young are nevertheless of legal drinking age.
Anyway, our chain implemented a challenge 25 rule following this story which took place at a nearby branch.
A young woman came in and purchased a single bottle of a popular alcho-pop. The cashier didn’t ID her and might have gotten away with this had it not been for what the customer did next.
The customer demanded that the cashier opened the bottle for her and then started swearing and screaming at them when they refused. This scene continued for so long that it attracted the attention of the person who turned out to be her social worker standing outside. The girl was 14. Yes the cashier was reported, yes they did lose their job and actually the shop was temporarily closed pending a review of their licence as a result of this.
