(I’m an undergraduate in a Genetics lab, working towards my thesis. One day, my professor introduces a new grant researcher, saying he “will solve the problems with our lab!” I didn’t even know our lab had problems, but there you go. The new researcher works on his project, is assigned to supervise another undergraduate girl, and generally keeps to himself. One Friday evening, we’re the only two people in the lab.)
Me: “I’m going home. Have a nice weekend.”
Researcher: “Same to you. See you.”
(On Monday, he’s nowhere to be seen, he does not call in, he does not reply to calls. Somewhat worried, we ask to “his” undergrad whether she knows something.
Undergrad: “He quit.”
Professor: “Are you kidding me?”
Undergrad: “Why would I? He told me he was quitting, effective today, and he could not help me with the project anymore.”
(Thus ended the story of the researcher who would solve our lab’s problems. We found out later he had become a pharmaceutical representative. For months after that, we’d leave each other on Friday with a “See you… (beat) …on Monday”
