Unfiltered Story #298977
When this story happened my goddaughter was 2-3 years old. We were on a somewhat long drive and I was trying to get her to go to sleep so she would be rested when we arrived.
Me: “Do you want me to sing you a song?”
Goddaughter: “yes”
Me: “what song should I sing?”
Goddaughter: “the Sunshine Song”
I sang her the first verse of “You are my sunshine” to her
Goddaughter: “Am I your sunshine?”
Me: “yes you are! In the song it says you make me happy on cloudy days, and that’s true, whenever I’m sad I think about you and how much I love you and it makes me happy!
Goddaughter: “Oh…Thank you”
Two years later I was trying to sing her to sleep and, running out of lullabies, I sang both the first and second verse of “You are my sunshine” to her. Thinking she was finally asleep I stopped after that, only to hear her sleepy voice speak up 15 seconds later:
Goddaughter: “That’s a sad song”.
I have to admit when I choose to dedicate the song to her I hadn’t realized how thought provoking it would prove to be for her young mind. I’m just waiting for her to ask me why anyone would think it was a good idea to rock a baby on the top of a tree next.
