Unfiltered Story #289766

, | Unfiltered | April 24, 2023

While running check out at a office supply store, I was ringing up a ladies items and asked (like always) if she had found everything she needed today. She said yes, and added “But I don’t seem to recognize the area I’m in. What part of (name of town 90+ miles away) is this dear?”
I have worked retail a very long time, and it takes a lot to surprise me. This did.
I stopped ringing her out, looked up and said “I’m sorry, I must not have heard you correctly. Could you please repeat that?”
She did, again naming a town 90+ miles away.
I replied ” It isn’t. This is (name of town we are in) hun.”
She got this stunned look on her face, and looked around while going “This is (name of town)…. Ohh my….”
I finished ringing her out, and watched as she left the store.
My boss came over simply because of my expression, and asked me what the customer had said to illicit my reaction, so I told him.
He then responded with “Holy crap. How the heck does she not realize this isn’t (town 90+ miles away)?”
I replied with ” That’s not what worries me. I’m only thinking of the fact that she’s driving today…..”
My boss replied with ” You’re right… that IS scary.”
