Unfiltered Story #288375

My first real renting experience with friends was… interesting. It was a 3 bedroom place and it wasn’t uncommon for us to have between 5 and 8 people actively living there at a time. We were part of a big LARP club (think dungeons and dragons but played IRL) and a lot of our club’s members are LGBTQ+ with unstable/unsafe home lives so we ran our home like a half-way house to help people who needed a safe space.

The core 4 of us on the lease would often joke about how I was the most sane person living there, but I think I ruined that illusion one early morning. My only defence is that I hadn’t had my morning coffee yet and sleep had been a little rough.

I was fighting with the toaster like it owed me money and it just. Wouldn’t. Toast. Bread. Finally the altercation ended with with the toaster on it’s side and crumbs just flooded out (that’s also the day I learnt I was the only one who regularly cleaned the thing apparently) so I threw my hands in the air and exclaimed in a horrendous attempt at Gollum’s voice:
“Master has presented dobby with crumbs from his breakfast… DOBBY IS A FREE APPLIANCE!!!”

… Yeah, turns out I wasn’t the only person awake like I originally thought and the living room exploded in laughter. From then on if anyone visiting made the comment about me being the sane one my core housemates would simply reply with a deadpan “Dobby” then burst into giggles all over again :S
