I work Law Enforcement at a prison. This happened many years ago when I was still an Officer. (I’ve since Promoted a couple of times.)

One year I had to work on my birthday which of course, no one likes to do. So I woke up early and decided I was going to get a tattoo before work as a birthday present to myself, which I do pretty regularly on my birthday. I decided on my name in Kanji lettering. Which is Chinese lettering. I get to work and I’ve been on post for a few hours when I go out to smoke. I walk to a table that had numerous inmates sitting there and was a group that I conversed with regularly. The following conversation ensued:
Inmate #1: Hey (My name) how are you?
Me: Pretty good (takes a drag of my cigarette)
Inmate #2 : Oh wow did you just get that today (pointing to my fresh tattoo on my forearm)
Me: Yes I did.
Inmate #1: Where did you get it?
Now mind you I routinely would joke with the inmates to try to make their time a bit easier and my day a little better as well.
Me: Oh in D- Pod, only cost me two packs of smokes, but don’t worry I’ll do a cell search later and get them back. (all laugh at this)
Inmate #3 pipes up “What does it say?”
Me: “It’s my name in Kanji”
Inmate #3 “Is that like another language?”
Me: …..
All the inmates lose it laughing so hard. I just shook my head and walked away also laughing.
