Unfiltered Story #281761

When I was pregnant I suffered from a condition called hyperemsis gravidarum, which caused me to vomit constantly for nearly my whole pregnancy. I couldn’t even keep down water.
This story happens when I was only a few weeks into pregnancy and knew something was not quite right. I called the health line who told me to head the the local emergency room of the hospital in the tiny rural town I was living in at the time. The nurses were all rude and dismissed me, saying I should have known that in pregnancy women get ‘a little bit sick’.
They eventually agree to call in a doctor (it’s such a small town doctors are only on call over the weekend) and he dismisses me just as much as the nurses do. Until this.
Doctor: ‘Do you have any history of mental health issues?’
Me: ‘Yes, I suffer from depression and anxiety.’
Doctor: ‘Well, everyone does suffer from depression at some point in their lives, so don’t act like it’s a special thing.’
Me: ‘I had my first suicide attempt at 12 and several others up until I turned 20. I’m on medication and have been seeing a psychologist to cope’
Doctor: ‘Oh… I guess your case is on the more severe side.’

He walked out and eventually came back to give me IV fluids and barely said another word.
I ended up going to another hospital in a bigger town that diagnosed me correctly and put me on medication throughout my pregnancy. They said I was close to losing my baby because I was so dehydrated when I got to them.
