Unfiltered Story #281205
It’s been a long day, on top of long weeks. My great-grandfather, who raised my mother and was my most present extended family member, was today buried, killed by COVID. We have a small gathering in his name. Soon, I’m tired, with 3 hours of sleep between work and readying for the funeral. I drive my grandmother home, then start home to my bed.
I’m keeping pace with traffic and going 52 on a 45 mph parkway when the police SUV next to me slows down and gets behind me with his lights on. I pull over in a dentist’s parking lot. Another cop soon pulls up.
I let my mom know, put my license and insurance on the window, and keep my hands clearly visible. I’ve been pegged as a drug user before due to being a long-haired masculine person. The initial cop comes to my window, peeking in the back with a hand near his holster.
Cop: “You definitely know why I pulled you over. Is this car insured?”
Me: “Yes sir, as the card says.”
Cop: “Who’s this woman on the insurance card?”
Me: “My mom. She remarried and changed her last name.”
Cop: “So you’re speeding around in someone else’s car?”
Me: “I pay for this vehicle under her name, and have since I was sixteen three years ago.”
The cop only then seems to realize I am wearing an all-black suit and have flowers and a folded flag in my passenger seat.
Cop: “Well, I’ll tell you what, kid. I’m a nice guy, and even though you were driving pretty fast there, I’m gonna give you a warning. Most people I’ve caught speeding today are going at least fifteen miles faster than the limit. So we’ll just forget about this. All of us are on traffic duty today, so we’re watching. Be careful.”
Both cops turn left out of the parking lot and leave my sight. I take a moment to text my mom, then turn right and start driving home, only to see both cops pull out of another lot behind me. They tailgate me for ten minutes before pulling into another lot and going back the way they came.
Glad to know our Boys in Blue are really protecting the people by stalking people for doing exactly as they do.
