Unfiltered Story #280727
A friend of mine has always been overweight, but she’s happy with her body. While I do wonder if she’s truly healthy, I’ve never stepped in to say she needs to change because every suggestion is met with aggressive accusations about fat phobia and body shaming. After a checkup with her doctor, she calls me, enraged.
Friend: That old a**hole told me I need to lose, like, 100 pounds.
(*I wonder if this is a frustrated exaggeration at first, but she is only 5ft3in and over 250lb, so it might not be*)
Me: Did he say why?
Friend: Some bulls*** about changing my diet, going on walks, some f***ing phobic slander.
Me: That’s why he wants you to lose weight?
Friend: No he said I was putting strain on my joints and I could develop diabetes and some other stuff. I tuned him out.
Me: Are those concerns you’ve had?
Friend: My body is not his business. He just wants to shame me. He’s acting like I’m only worth something if I’m a skinny a** bitch.
Me: (*Carefully*) Maybe you misunderstood his intent…
Friend: (*Defensive*) Oh yeah? Then why don’t you tell me, since you clearly know more.
Me: It sounds like he was warning you about potential health risks, not really shaming you.
Friend: You weren’t even there.
Me: That’s why I’m trying to understand.
Friend: Well why is he always telling me what to do? I gotta lose weight, I gotta exercise. Do this, do that.
Me: You went for a checkup and your doctor gave you advice. If you don’t like him, find a new doctor.
Friend: I love my body, I’m not changing for society.
Me: Okay, then just ignore him.
(*A few seconds of silence*)
Friend: Well, he owes me an apology. Body shaming is not okay.
Me: I could be wrong, but I still think he was just trying to look out for your overall health.
Friend: (*she makes a disgusted sound and hangs up*)
That night, I saw she made a post about fat phobic medical professionals and how people always side with them because they have doctorates She made a second post about how *true friends* love and support you if you’re overweight, underweight, or anywhere in between. I wonder who she was talking about?
