Unfiltered Story #279571

A few years back, my husband and I had an amazing honeymoon in Ireland – amazing except for the very beginning, that is.

Unknown to us, one young guest at our wedding was contagious for a stomach bug, which hit at least seven people the next day, including my husband. Specifically, it hit him during the flight over. Thankfully, we were seated only one row back from the restroom, but it was still the most miserable flight either of us had been on.

After we landed, we rested in the airport for a bit before catching a taxi to the B&B we had reservations at. Although it was 7am and our rooms would of course not be ready, we had arranged to drop off our luggage with our hosts so we could sight-see unencumbered; we now hoped that maybe they would have a temporary place for us to bunker down. We were dropped off, and we rang the doorbell – nothing. We knocked on the door – nothing.

After a few tries, we figured we’d call – my husband had his smartphone, but we hadn’t paid for overseas service, so we found a grocery store and asked to use their phone… and no one at the B&B answered. So we found the one cafe open at this hour in this little Irish suburb, bought a pot of tea (that neither of us touched), and just sort of… existed for an hour. Finally, we decided to try calling from the grocery store again. One of the hosts picked up… and asked if we’d gotten lost!

Turns out the couple had been awake the whole time, so it’s anyone’s guess how they managed to miss both the door and the previous phone call. But they were a very sweet couple, and as soon they let us in they got a room ready right away for us – even though it was only 10am – and my husband was able to sleep off the rest of his illness.

At least we got the worst out of the way quickly!
