Unfiltered Story #279566
This happened a few years ago. I was at the park with my mother-in-law, visiting from Visakhapatnam, and my children. I was sitting on a bench and talking with my mother-in-law in Telugu since she knows nearly no English. Some rather rude White woman came and started yelling at us.
Woman: You know its impolite to speak foreign in America? This is an English speaking country. How do I know you’re not talking about me?
Mother in Law: (thick Telugu accent) I do nauttu know whatyauwaru sayingu.
Me: *In Telugu* She is saying that you should only speak English in America.
Mother-in-Law: (Scoldingly, in Telugu) Aha! So you are saying if you were to travel to Andhra, you will be speaking perfectly in Telugu. If you go to Karnataka, you will perfectly speak in Kannada? You will only travel to places where they speak this horrid English language?
Of course, the woman only heard it as “అః! ఐతే, నువ్వు ఆంధ్ర పోయినప్పుడు చక్క మంచి తెలుగు మాట్లాడిస్తావా వాల్నిదాగారు? నువ్వు కర్ణాటక పోయినప్పుడు వాల్నిదాగారు బాగా కన్నడ మాట్లాడిస్తావా? అది లేదైతే నువ్వు వెట్టి ఈ కచ్చడా చెడ్డది ఇంగ్లీషు దేశులు పోతావా?” but she still looked uncomfortable, as a grandmother scolding someone younger than her is still a universal fear, and so the woman left us alone.
