Unfiltered Story #278265

I’m a guy from an abusive family home that left me with C-PTSD- it was built over countless tiny acts of abuse, rather than big, easy to describe ones. My husband has heard about all the stuff my mother and step-father put me through over the years and when something even tangentially related to them comes up- such as something tied into deeply rooted issues- he has a very particular phrase that he likes to say.
The first time he said it was not too long after we got married and I cut ties with my family. (The one made me realise the other was necessary.) I don’t know why, but we got to talking about slippers- I explained that I hated slippers, because my parents would punish me if I ever wandered around the house without them on, but being a clumsy child I would frequently find myself falling down- or up- the stairs if I was wearing slippers. I keenly remember the birth of his favourite phrase-

“Have I ever mentioned that I hate your parents?”

I absolutely burst out laughing, unable to even reply for a few minutes, before finally saying that no, actually, he had NOT ever mentioned that, and with everything that they put me through I found it hilarious that the thing that finally prompted him to say so was… Slippers!

(By the way I’m completely fine with him having this phrase- if anyone has earned the right to hate them, he has, and it amuses me to this day.)
