Unfiltered Story #273183

(It’s a Wednesday, and besides trying to help order a department that I rarely order, I’m also trying to do a project. I’m *also* running back and forth to registers, as it’s a busier day than I expected. My coworker calls me up for a customer service code–after not receiving a response from our co-manager, who’s on lunch–and I go see what she needs. It turns out to be a picture frame that needs to be cleaned. I take it back to the frame shop to see what I can do, enlisting the help of one of our assistant managers, as our manager and our main frame shop person are off for the day. After a few minutes of trying to clean the adhesive residue off this frame, our bookkeeper walks by.)

Bookkeeper: “Did [Coworker] call you up there to clean a frame?”

Me: “Mm-hm. The customer needs it for a gift in an hour and it’s the only one. Honestly, who buys a gift an hour before they need to be somewhere?”

Bookkeeper: “To be fair, that’s usually me.”

Assistant: “Yeah, me too.”

([Bookkeeper] helps us, and we get the frame mostly cleaned up. I take it up to the customer and she leaves with it. Later:)

Bookkeeper: *trying to help me put an item back in its packaging* “Hey, don’t punch anybody today, okay?”

(I kind of laugh, because that’s a running joke with us, but agree. Our co-manager walks over to ask if I’m done with my project yet.)

Me: “Not getting very far.”

Bookkeeper: “[My Name] keeps getting called to registers every ten minutes.”

Me: “More like every five seconds.”

(I do manage to get my project done with less than five minutes left of my shift, with help from another coworker. Oh, and guess who returned the picture frame the next day? It didn’t work the way the customer expected, and I was on the refund register when she came in to return it, so I ended up spending two minutes listening to her tell me how it didn’t work–which I think any of us could have told her if she’d asked us the day before. Sigh.)

Question of the Week

Have you ever served a bad customer who got what they deserved?

I have a story to share!
