Unfiltered Story #263607

I work in IT support for a large agricultural group in France. One day I get this call:
Me: “Support IT! [my name], how can I help you?”
User: “Hi! One of your colleagues helped me yesterday and put [application that they use] on my computer but it isn’t working now.”
Me: “Let me see how I can help you”
We have the option of connecting remotely to their computers so I do it and reprogram their application on their computer. Then, because the computer needs to update in order to recognize the application as installed, I tell the user:
Me: “Could you please restart your computer, ma’am?”
She goes to the start menu and presses very confidently the “Shut down” button before I have the time to correct her. I loose the connection to her computer, while inside I’m screaming myself hoarse. I tell her that she shouldn’t have done that then I ask her if her computer is back on.
User: “I only see a black screen. Is that normal?”
Me (screaming harder on the inside): “Did you turn it back on from the power button?”
User: “Oh…”
Finally, after another restart, when the computer actually installs her application, and an hour spent on the phone with her because she couldn’t remember her credentials and me trying to stay polite and smiling, I close the call.
