Unfiltered Story #263007

I am from Birmingham, UK and on a 2 week holiday in Orlando with a friend.

One evening we are waiting for the lift back to our room when we get chatting with an American couple. They are on holiday too, and after discussing general plans this happens:

Man: Where is you accent from? I can’t quite place it.
Me (not missing an opportunity for amusement): Tell you what, 2 guesses and then I’ll tell you!
Man: Sure! Hmm… It sounds like you’re from out of state… Ah! New York right? Probably Boston!
Me: *giggling* No, not quite.
Woman: How about… Texas!
Me: No! I’m from Birmingham!
When he looks baffled I realise the mistake I made.
Me: I’m from England! Birmingham, England! Definitely not from Alabama!
Woman: Oh wow! We were so wrong!

To this day I am not sure how my accent was even close to that of a person from Boston or Texas… or how it sounded similar to either!
