This is my parents story, from a long time ago when vegetarianism was less supported. Despite the changes in time however, it is still difficult a lot of the time.

My parents were in a restaurant in Madeira, and they asked the waiter which things were vegetarian, as it didn’t say on the menu. They were told the soup was vegetarian.
When it arrived, there were chunks of sausage floating in it.
They called the waiter over.
Parents: The soup has meat in it! You told us it was vegetarian?
Waiter: That isn’t meat madam, that is sausage

(There might also have been another incident where the waiter assumed they ate fish as well, but I can’t remember the story well enough)
