(This is my mom’s story. She had an abusive mom and child welfare laws were non existent. One day, when she was about 18, her younger brother punched her in her face and bloodied her nose. Grandma acted like nothing happened. Her older brother, my uncle, found out what happened.)

Uncle: “Hey mom, why did my brother punch her? She’s a girl!”

Grandma: “She deserved it. She was antagonizing him.”

Uncle: “But she’s a girl, it’s not right for men to hit women.”

Grandma: “No it’s not right but your sister is a brat.”

Uncle: “Still. You spoil him too much and I’m going to go beat him up.”

Grandma: “No, don’t hurt my baby!”

(My uncle threw a few punches at his brother, who ran off. My grandma howled and screamed. Soon after my mom married my dad and I wish I could say that she never spoke to my grandma and younger brother ever again, but she insisted they were good and brought her kids to visit. I don’t know how.)
