(At my fabric store, one of our counter ladies is a very sweet Hispanic immigrant. While she’s very obviously Spanish-speaking, she’s also very fluent in both English and German. She’s cutting some flannel for a customer who is on the phone.)
Customer: [in German] Yeah, I’m at [store]. There’s a [slur] here, might check how this stuff is cut before I pay. Shouldn’t be too long.
(The customer keeps insulting my coworker over the phone. My coworker finishes the order.)
Coworker: Is this all for you?
Customer: Yes, thank you.
(My coworker gives the BIGGEST smile.)
Coworker: [in german] Okay, thank you! Have a nice day!
(The customer goes pale and hurries away. My other coworkers and I start laughing.)
Coworker #2: Oh my god, [coworker #1], that was great!
Coworker #1: I’ve heard a lot of stupid people. Just because I’m not from here doesn’t mean I don’t know s***!
