There’s a series of Flash animations I like, made by a Korean trio. In college I tried to look into their other works, but everything else they’d made had Korean writing, and none of them had been translated into English. One of the students I hung out with in college was an international student from Korea, so one day I asked her if she could read one of the short comics they’d written and tell me what it said in English.

She agreed, and began to read and translate… But then suddenly she hesitated, seeming embarrassed. When I asked what was wrong, she struggled to find the right words (and was also embarrassed to tell me), but managed to explain that the sentence she’d just read was a double entendre. In literal terms, it was simply a description of part of the process of making bungeo-ppang (a fish-shaped pastry stuffed with sweetened red bean paste); but it was also a sexual innuendo. With some effort, she managed to explain exactly what kind of sex act it described.

She tried to read more of the comic, but she kept running into more double entendres and sexual innuendos. She’d be in the middle of reading a sentence and suddenly would gasp in shock. (But to her credit, she tried in spite of her embarrassment to translate and explain the double meanings.) Finally I realized that this was the whole gimmick of the story, and I told her to stop, not wanting to put her through any more discomfort.

I don’t remember exactly what either of us said during this whole incident, except for one thing she said that I wrote down: “It’s about making the bread, but if I didn’t see that picture, it’s also describing sex!”
