Unfiltered Story #229555

I am a retail manager that works in a store with oddball items that you won’t find in most stores. naturally around the holidays, we get lots of customers looking for white elephant gifts because they want to embarrass their loved ones when they open them up in front of others. (blow up dolls, toys, those sorts of things). also, the store is very small so when we get a lot of customers, its loud, but fun.
on one particular busy day, we had a customer come in who right off the bat could tell she was in a bad mood. i said hello to her, and she waved me away with gruff. i think nothing of it, and go to help the next customer. about 10 seconds later, i hear her talking to one of my co-workers about not needing help, but because the store was pack, could hear her over the music and people (so she was was yelling it). we kind of shrugged it off, and proceeded to help others that we shopping.
about 2 minutes later, she comes to the register and i happened to be up there ringing people out, when this took place:

Me: hi there! did you find everything ok…….
Customer: ARE YOU DEAF OR SOMETHING….WHY ARE YOU SCREAMING AT ME!??!?!
(I was taken aback, and so were the customers standing around her)
Me: Oh my apologizes…i have bad sinuses and sometimes i don’t realize that i am talking louder than normal…..
Customer: OH MY GOD YOU ARE SCREAMING AT ME STILL…..WILL YOU SHUT UP!!?!?
Me: (taking a deep breath, internally scream, and lowered my voice to practically a whisper): My apologies…..
Customer: OH MY GOD CAN YOU EVEN FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS!? I HAVE HAD TO LIVE WITH MY MOTHER FOR THE PAST MONTH AND SHE IS DEAF SO WANTED TO COME OUT WHERE I COULD HAVE SOME PIECE AND QUIET AND ALL YOU PEOPLE HAVE DONE TODAY IS SCREAM AND YELL AT ME!!!

at this point, a small crowd has formed at the register and are listening to her rant, so i am ringing her out as fast as possible to get her out of there! i finish ringing her out, hand her her bag, and before i could even stop myself yelled:

MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!!!

she huffed and practically screamed the whole way out. i started giggling embarrassed as it is not on my nature to do something like that.
