Unfiltered Story #215956
My toddler daughter and I are at the zoo with her friend and her friend’s mother. We are white; her friend is black. As we’re heading to the exit…
Daughter, pointing to her friend: Mom! Black!
Me: What? Her name is [name].
Daughter, more insistent: Black!
Me, to the mother: I swear, we don’t refer to her as “Your black friend” or anything but her name. I’m not sure where this is coming from.
Daughter, all the way back to the parking lot: Black! BLACK!
We arrive at our cars, parked next to each other.
Daughter, pointing to the friend’s black minivan: Black! Please, I go?
Me, finally realizing: OH! She wants to ride back in your BLACK car with [friend]!
We adults got a good laugh out of that.
