It is a couple minutes before we close for the night. The last customers in the store have left and my manager, coworker, and I are doing the closing duties when the phone rings. I answer.
Me: Thank you for calling [store] at [shopping center], my name is [my name], how can I help you?
Customer: Hi, I have an online order to pick up in the store. I know you guys close at eight, but could you stay open later for me? I know you have to stay after to clean up and stuff.
Me: I’m sorry, Ma’am, but we will be closed and our registers and computers will be shut off. We will open tomorrow morning at ten o’clock.
Customer: Please? I thought you closed at nine, so I waited for my husband to get home from work, but he was late, and now I’m about ten minutes out…
Me: Again, I apologize, but we cannot remain open after close. Our systems will be shut off and we will not be able to help you. We will open tomorrow at ten AM.
Customer: Can’t you close me out over the phone and just hand my order to me through the door?
[I’ve pulled up her order after verifying her last name. It is a large, heavy item that we can’t simply hand over to her. My manager pauses in counting the money in the safe and takes over.]
Manager: We are now closed. Our registers are shutting down. Come back in the morning. Have a nice evening.
[We finished closing and left for the night. No idea if she showed up or not.]
