I work in a reception at a rather nice and big firm where a lot of people pass by all through the day, so it’s never completely quiet, people passing by might talk rather loudly etc. There’s also a café area close by, so when we answer the phone clients might sometimes hear some noise in the background.

Me – Welcome to *******, you are speaking with (my name).

Caller – Hello, I’m looking for a (here a couple of people close to my desk laugh very loudly, making me not hear what the caller is saying. It is very obvious I’m not one of the people laughing)… and I don’t know who to talk to.

Me – I am sorry, I did not catch that, what did you say you were looking for?

Caller- (with a snobby, affronted and “fake nice” voice) Sounds like you are having fun?……. But maybe you should remember that you are working at an office? (translation: you are acting very unproffesional and I’m telling you this in a condecending and passive aggresive way)

Me – (with a kind voice) Sorry? I work in the reception and people are unfortunately sometimes loud when passing by. If you would please repeat what you are looking for I will connect you to the right person.

Caller- You should try to be more professional when answering the phone.

Me – (still with a nice voice) Err… I do not quite understand, it was not me laughing, I work in a reception where a lot of people pass by, I can not control what they do? If you would please repeat what you are looking for I will transfer you to the right person.

Still sounding very affronted about having to repeat the question, she begrudgingly tells me what she’s looking for and I transfer her to the right person.
I guess she really hates having to repeat herself? Or the sound of people having fun?
