Unfiltered Story #200685

(The locally owned pizza/sub chain where I work recently began enforcing their policy that requires us to take a phone number for walk-in-carry-out orders, to the point of making it impossible for us to ring up an order without a phone number. Many of our regular customers are confused by this, since we never took their numbers before. Some people are a bit reluctant to give us their numbers, but this gentleman was a bit more memorable than most.)

Customer: *Struts in wearing full prison guard uniform* “Yeah, I’d like to order (sandwich), to go.”

Me: “Certainly sir, could I please have a phone number for that order?”

Customer: “Oh, that won’t be necessary.”

Me: “I’m sorry sir, but I’m afraid it will.”

Customer: “No, it won’t.”

Me: “Yes sir, it will.”

Customer: *Very emphatically* “I AM A CORRECTIONAL FACILITY OFFICER, AND I SAY IT WILL NOT BE NECESSARY!”

Me: “Sir, I am the manager of this store, and the woman who is ringing up your order, and I say that if you want your sandwich, I have to have your phone number, because it is literally impossible for me to place an order without a phone number.”

Customer: *Blinks rapidly for a few seconds* “Oh.”

(He then proceeds to stare me down for about a minute, while I keep a firm but polite smile on my face, before finally giving me a phone number. I don’t get paid enough for this s**t.)
