(A teenage girl and her mother approach the deli to order a sandwich.)
Me: Hi! What can I get for you?
Teenager: I want a Cuban.
(I like to ask customers whether they want certain subs toasted, rather than just assume- even ones that usually come toasted, because many customers rather have them cold.)
Me: Would you like that toasted?
Teenager: …Toasted?
Me: Yes. Would you like your sandwich toasted?
Teenager: (blankly) …What does that mean?
(The mother and I share what can only be described as a ‘what the f***?’ look.)
Mother: (sighs, glares disgustedly at her daughter, then looks to me) No… just no.
