Unfiltered Story #190106

[It’s a Sunday. Customers are coming at a steady pace after being seated by our hostess. One man seats himself at our counter. As soon as I’m able to, I come over to help him to tell him his server will be right with him.]
Me: Hello, [Coworker] is…
Customer: [His attitude is snotty from the moment he comes in.] [Dish specific to restaurant]. Eggs scrambled, bacon, wheat toast. Coffee. To go.
[I pause, thinking he’s trying to replace the pancakes with toast, and I know we’re not allowed to do that with this dish. So I ask the next question to be sure.]
Me: Do you need syrup with your pancakes?
Customer: No, I want wheat toast.
Me: I’m sorry, but we are unable to do that substitution.
Customer: Well, at the [Restaurant] back home, they let me do it all the time. I’m a frequent connoisseur of [Restaurant].
Me: They may do it there, but we are not permitted to do that here.
Customer: [glaring at me] Go get your manager. He’ll override it.
[By this point, I’m pretty fed up with his attitude, and I’m not going to get my manager so he can tell the customer the same thing. Regardless, my manager is in the kitchen trying to help food get out in a timely manner.]
Me: He is going to tell you the same thing I am. We are not allowed to do that substitution.
Customer: Go get your manager.
Me: He’s in the kitchen right now, helping our cooks, and he will say the same thing.
Customer: Whatever. [He spins out of the chair and stomps off]
Me: Goodbye!
[One of the few times I’ve been able to take pleasure in telling a customer no. If you come in with that poor of an attitude and keep insisting we do something that we are not allowed to do, then I’m not going to do it, especially if you keep telling me that “the manager will override it.” God help the employees at [Restaurant] back home who have to deal with your attitude.]
