Unfiltered Story #18535

Unfiltered | August 22, 2016

My sister and I just moved to Japan, we both only know a small amount of Japanese. People can tell we are not from japan by the way we look and luckily, we are in the city so a lot of people speak English. My sister and I go into a American ice cream store and I noticed a tip jar which is quite uncommon in Japan. On it it reads “we sing for tips.”

Worker one: *smiles because I saw the jar but does not speak english*

Worker two: speaking for worker one, “Can we sing for you?”

Me: (note I have severe social anxiety) wide eyed, “No. … please.”

Worker two: still wanting a tip, he flips the ice cream in the air

When paying I make sure they see I tipped about five dollars in yen. I swear the worker looked like he wanted to cry because tips are not normal in

Japan, people probably don’t tip at all or tips such a small amount.
