13 Enlightening Stories About Old Technology

| Right | June 30, 2021

Dear readers,

Our first story was posted in October 2007. Back then, there were no smartphones. We were still three years away from Instagram, and YouTube was less than two years old. We have to face facts, we’re old.

One of the delightful aspects of having a collection of stories spread over almost fourteen years is noticing the changes in the use of technology by our readers, and how many of them have become obsolete so quickly. How many of our younger readers know about MapQuest, when they have convenient map apps literally on the tip of their fingers? Watching a movie on a physical disc, while still quite common today, has very much been superseded by streaming. And floppy disks? Well, they now exist only as the save symbol!

We’ve rounded up thirteen of our earlier stories about customers who used the technology of that time (we sound like time-travelers!) when it was commonplace, just to showcase how far we’ve come. We hope you find it as fascinating as we have!

When Men Were Men & Electronics Were Multi-Taskers – You know, you could just buy a shelf.

Taxing Faxing, Part 3 – Same old story, just different technology.

Read/Write/Think Error – Similarly, you have to actually open the book to read what’s in it.

Introducing Byte-agra – To be fair, they’re not particularly floppy.

Byte Off More Than You Can Chew – I would not have the patience to explain this to a customer.

And On The Eighth Day, He Created Fax – I dare you to find the word “fax” in the Bible one time.

Ironically, She’s Applying For A Customer Service Position – I don’t think this is a problem with technology.

Introducing The iKa-Chunk – Okay, this one’s actually kind of cute.

Renamed: The iPod Please Touch The Frigging Screen – To be fair, until touch screens became a thing, you were generally encouraged not to touch screens.

A Flock Of Explorers On A Safari Singing Opera – And now I’m hungry.

Just, Like, Smile And Nod – Oh, come on. The number of minutes in an hour is not new information!

Like, OMG, You’re Stupid – Thank God for Google.

Getting Lost On The Super Highway – We sort of wonder how long it took this poor employee to explain.
