12 Weird And Witty Stories For Word Nerd Day!

| Right | January 9, 2021

Dear readers,

Do you have a favorite word? I have a bunch! Queue, ubiquitous, ecumenical, literary, fortuitous, and endoplasmic reticulum are just a few. They’re fun to spell, fun to say, or just plain weird.

Today in the US is National Word Nerd Day, and as an editor, I am so stoked! There’s nothing I love more than the moment when I figure out how two similar words are connected or finally remember that super-specific nugget of linguistic goodness that’s just on the tip of my tongue.

We’ve collected 12 stories about wordplay of all kinds for you to enjoy, relish, appreciate, and savor!

Chipzendazzled – I prefer some good vejeezendypp, personally.

That Isn’t A Flavor I’m Familiar With – We know they have some odd flavors in Asia, but I don’t think this is on the list.

Haven’t Got The Balls To Eat Them – Maybe I’m childish, but I can’t stop giggling.

All That For Nothing – Ich will ein Berliner.

Comes With Free Broadsword – This story is just brutal.

Going GaGa Over Your Abbreviations – Don’t let the title fool you; this story contains no Lady Gaga references.

Has You Under Their Spelling – And now I’m T as in Tired, I as in Irritated, R as in Rankled, E as in Exhausted, and D as in Dead.

Going To Milk This One Forever – The laptop I normally use to look up these things is broken!

A Request That Raises Eyebrows – Ken: one’s range of knowledge or sight. As in, “What she wanted was beyond my ken.”

I Would Do Anything For Beef, But I Won’t Do That – You gotta connect the brain thing to the mouth thing.

That’s Some Real Broken Spanish – I took four years of Spanish in school and I couldn’t remember that one, either.

A Sweet Twist – If you do that, kiddo,  you can call it whatever you want.
