I work customer service for an online intetnet retailer. We make outgoing call only with regards to orders, and always leave a name, order number and phone number, but we can’t identify incoming callers. This was one call I took recently.

Me: Thank you for calling (business name), my name is (my name), how may we help you?

Customer: Hi, I got a call from you people.

Me: Okay, was this in regards to an order you placed with us?

Customer: Yes. I thought my order went through so why are you calling me?

Me: If you have the order number or the name on the order I can look that up for you…

Customer: But you guys called me; why?

Me: Do you have the name on the order or the order number? I need to look up the order number to see why we called.

Customer: But you guys called me. Why do you need to look anything up?

Me: Sir, I don’t know why we called as I wasn’t the person who called. We have several staff members who could have called for a variety of reasons. I need to look up your specific order to see why we were trying to reach you. Do you have an order number or the name on the order?
Customer: Oh.
