And sometimes, *I’m* that customer…

Working a research gig across Europe for the past two years, I’ve gotten the hang of ordering fast food when I don’t speak the language by just spying something on the menu that looks good and then butchering the words written beside it as best I can. It worked pretty well, until I tried it at a taco stand in France. The guy at the counter just looked confused and got me to repeat it and point. Then he shook his head and fetched a cook who spoke English.

Apparently, it was a build-your-own-taco sort of place and I had just emphatically asked for “oven baked food.”
